Jewellery Care

Sterling Silver Jewellery Care Guide

Every piece of Lunar Moth Jewellery is made by hand in our Nottingham workshop using sterling silver and carefully selected gemstones. Because each piece is made to be worn, gifted and kept, a little regular care will help your jewellery stay bright, comfortable and beautiful for years to come.

Sterling silver naturally changes over time. It can develop tarnish when exposed to air, moisture, perfumes, creams, cleaning products or everyday chemicals. This is normal and does not mean the jewellery is faulty. With gentle care, sterling silver can be cleaned, polished and brought back to a lovely shine.

These care notes are based on how we finish, polish and look after handmade sterling silver jewellery in our own workshop.

Everyday Care

Remove jewellery before swimming, showering, spa treatments, using hot tubs, exercising, gardening, sleeping or handling harsh cleaning products.

Apply perfume, deodorant, hairspray, moisturiser and hand sanitiser before putting on your jewellery. Let these products dry first, then put your jewellery on afterwards.

Avoid direct contact with lotions, perfumes and chemicals that can tarnish silver or damage gemstones.

For rings, especially gemstone rings, try to avoid knocks, pressure or harsh contact with hard surfaces. Gemstones are secure when set properly, but they are still natural materials and should be treated with care.

How to Clean Sterling Silver Jewellery

For light tarnish, use a soft silver polishing cloth and gently rub the surface of the jewellery. This is usually enough to bring back the shine.

For handmade hammered rings or textured pieces, polish gently so you do not flatten or overwork the finish. The texture is part of the character of the piece, so a light touch is best.

Avoid abrasive cleaners, toothpaste, household cleaning products and rough cloths, as these can scratch the silver or damage gemstones.

How to Clean Gemstone Jewellery

Gemstone jewellery needs a little extra care. We recommend cleaning gemstone rings, necklaces and earrings with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Avoid silver dips, ultrasonic cleaners and chemical jewellery cleaners unless a professional jeweller has confirmed they are safe for that specific gemstone. Some stones are more delicate than others and can be damaged by heat, chemicals or sudden changes in temperature.

If your jewellery includes a gemstone and you are unsure how to clean it, please contact us before using any cleaning solution.

How to Store Your Jewellery

Store each piece separately in a jewellery box, pouch or soft cloth bag to help prevent scratches and tangling.

Try to keep jewellery away from damp rooms such as bathrooms, as moisture can speed up tarnishing. A cool, dry place is best.

If you do not wear a piece often, keeping it wrapped or stored separately will help preserve the finish.

Can I Wear Sterling Silver Jewellery Every Day?

Yes, sterling silver jewellery can be worn every day, but it should still be looked after.

Pieces that are worn regularly may pick up small marks over time. This is normal for handmade jewellery and becomes part of the life of the piece. Regular gentle polishing will help keep the silver bright.

Rings usually experience more wear than necklaces or earrings because they come into contact with hands, surfaces, water and products more often. Taking rings off before heavy tasks will help them last longer.

Caring for Hammered Sterling Silver Rings

Hammered silver has a textured surface that catches the light beautifully. To care for it, polish gently with a soft cloth and avoid using anything abrasive.

Because hammered rings have texture, they may hold tiny amounts of polish or residue in the surface. If this happens, wipe gently with a clean, dry cloth.

Caring for Meaningful Gifts

If you have chosen Lunar Moth Jewellery as a gift, we want it to be something that can be worn and enjoyed with confidence. If the recipient has any questions about sizing, care or aftercare, they are welcome to contact us directly.
